Former Windsor Businessman passes away
Frederick “Fred” Roland Boyd, age 88 of Sweets Corner, Hants County. It was with great sadness that we announced the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, on Sunday, August 12th, 2012, in the Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Born on May 17th, 1924, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Frederick Thomas and Gertrude (Armstrong) Boyd. Fred was a hard worker, having left school at an early age to help his father in the transfer business, at which time was conducted by horse and wagon. After his brother, Grant joined them Boyd’s Transfer Company was formed. They purchased a fleet of trucks and later school buses, which conveyed thousands of children to school in Hants County. Fred was popular with the students and as adults they often reminiscence about the days when Fred was their bus driver. In 1947 he married Bertha, the love of his life and not only did Fred capture Bertha’s heart, he also captured his in-laws (Ralph and Ethel Ellis) hearts. During the Second World War, he was stationed in St. John’s Newfoundland with Army Transport. It was there that his love of the Jeep was formed and he also discovered many good fishing spots. After the war, Fred and several of his fishing friends made an annual fishing trip to Newfoundland, always coming back with a big catch. Sadly several of those friends passed on before him and he missed them terribly. Fred loved the outdoors hunting, fishing and just walking in the woods was a pleasure for him. Fred had gained many friends over the years. Due to declining health, Fred and Grant were unable to carry on the family business. However Fred didn’t feel he was ready to completely retire, so he started a second hand furniture and bottle exchange which he enjoyed immensely. When he finally did retire in 1993, his retirement was sadly short lived because of a fire in 1995, which consumed his Albert Street home. After this, they moved to Bertha’s former home in Sweets Corner. Although having always lived in Windsor he quickly adjusted to country living and liked it so well he didn’t want to move back to Windsor. Fred was a gentleman with a quiet nature who loved the wild life and the beautiful birds which he fed daily. He faced several health problems the last few years but with the help of Home Care he was able to remain at home up until the last few months. Fred is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, the former Bertha Ellis; his beloved daughters “his dolls”, Wenda (Neville) Greeley, Corner Brook, Nfld.; Janice (Kelly) Drummond, Naples, Florida; cherished grandchildren, Meghan, Mitchell, Ryan Greeley, Chelsea and Sasha Drummond, of whom Fred was so proud of their accomplishments; brother, Grant, Dykeland Lodge; sister, Norma Lake, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Brenda (twin to Wenda); his sister, Helen Boyd; sister-in-law, Mona Boyd; brother-in-law, Keith Lake. There was no visitation at Fred’s request. A family graveside service was 3:30 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. The Rev. Debra Mosher officiated. Donations in memory of Fred were requested to be made to Dykeland Lodge, 124 Cottage Street, Windsor or the Hants Community Hospital Foundation, 89 Payzant Drive, Windsor. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to P.O. Box 657, Windsor, NS - BON 2TO. Add your condolences, click on “Sign Guest Book” at, www.lindsaysfuneralhome.com
