Lyda Frances Fisher

Fisher: Lyda Frances, passed away peacefully at Elk Court, Brookfield, on Thursday, August 16, 2012, nine days after her 93rd birthday. Born in Lower Debert, Lyda attended a one room school, then Colchester Academy for Grade 12, and received her Teacher’s License at the Normal College, Truro. She taught at the Otter Brook School for two years, did substitute teaching, and also worked with her husband, John, at the Upper Stewiacke Post Office for over 20 years. Lyda was a Member and Honorary Elder of the Middle Stewiacke United Church. She was the last Charter Member of Elm Chapter #48, Order of the Eastern Star, Upper Stewiacke, of which she was a Past Matron and a Life Member after 45 years as secretary. She was a Charter Member and Life Member of the United Church Women and a member of Unit 8. She was a member of the former Otter Brook Women’s Institute and the Stewiacke Valley Historical Society. Lyda liked to travel, traveling with the John Fisher Choir to many churches in the Maritimes, and she made several trips to New Zealand. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, writing in her diary, doing the Lexicon, and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by sons, Ray (Marlene) Fisher, Dartmouth; Maxwell (Laura) Fisher, Halfway Brook; daughters, Kaye (Ken) Retson, Brookfield; Brenda (John) Visser, Christchurch, New Zealand; brother, Lester (Shirley Armsworthy) Wyllie; brother-in-law, Henry Fisher; sisters-in-law, Helen Fisher and Gladys Wyllie; grandchildren, John (Jean) Fisher, Darren (Jenny) Retson, James, Tanya and Shawn Retson; great grandchildren,Tessa and Addison; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John; her parents, Gordon and Elizabeth Wyllie; brothers, Chellis, Wilfred and Max; brothers-in-law, Harold, Alex, and George; sisters-in-law, Doris, Susie, Betty, Jessie and Margie. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro. No visitation by request. Elm Chapter #48 of the Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a service on Sunday, August 19, at 2pm followed by funeral service with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating, all in the Middle Stewiacke United Church. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment will then be held in the Middle Stewiacke Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Middle Stewiacke United Church Memorial Fund, Elm Chapter #48, Order of the Eastern Star, or a charity of your choice.
