Sam Joseph, a longtime resident of Cabot Street, Sydney and Big Pond in the summer, passed away at Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a brief illness on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012.
In the past few years, Sam made his home at Taigh Na Mara and most recently Harbourstone.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Habeeb and Sarah (Libbus) Joseph.
Sam was a Second World War veteran who served overseas and a retiree of Sydney Steel. He was a member of St. Joseph Syrian Lebanese Society. Sam was an avid fisherman, hunter, and card player. He excelled in tarbish, crib and horseshoes.
He is survived by his daughters, Norma (Blair) McDonald, Big Pond, Sarah (David) Genter, Sydney, Barbara (Jamie) Masterson, Calgary; son, Richard (Cheryl), Sydney; sisters, Amelia ‘Meme’ Sommers, Sydney, Henriatta Sampson, Halifax and granchildren Christine, Joseph, Jamie (Janelle)& Joshua McDonald, Erin & Grace Genter, Sarah & Leah Masterson, Parnell (Toula), and Meagan Joseph.
He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma Mary; brothers, Joe, Aber and David “Dates”, and grandson John McDonald.
Visitation will be held Monday, Aug. 20, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral mass will take place Tuesday 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, Big Pond, with Rev. Joe Gillis officiating. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Big Pond.
Memorial donations may be made to the Last Post Fund or Charity of Choice.
