Date de décès : 18 août 2012
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Verna June Laffin, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and best friend. Mom passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
June was born in Florence, Cape Breton, and was the daughter of Mary Belle and Arthur Howard.
June raised a family of 12 children who were and still are continuously devoted to her. She spent her entire life nurturing and raising us all. We will always be proud to call her mom. June enjoyed a Saturday night game of cards, which brought many laughs and great memorable moments that will stay forever in our hearts. She will also be missed by her many friends at the Strand bowling alleys.
We all knew not to visit or call her when “Coronation Street” was on. Mom also enjoyed walking to the bottom of the shore sitting on her bench that was so lovingly built by her good neighbour Bobby Gerrow, with her best friends Aunt Babes and Kaye at her side watching the waves rolling in.
Mom loved having visits from all her girls but especially from her two boys, so lovingly referred to by their sisters as her “sookies.”
Mom is survived by her husband, Bobby, was blessed with nine daughters, Carolyn (Lennard) Jenkins, Barb (Lawrence) Jardine, Susie (Norma) Basil Cantwell, Roberta (Gerard) MacKinnon, Catherine (Danny) MacLean, Anna (Gerald) Parsons, Joan Laffin, Laura Lee (Colin) Bruce, Verna (Jeff) Sponney, and her two sons, Arthur (Marla) Laffin, and Howie (Nancy) Laffin. June is also survived by her loving and caring sister, Norma (Babes) Taylor; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren with three more on the way.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, son, David, grandson, Kevin, sister, Shirley and brother, Ernest.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of June’s life will take place at Wilson United Church Florence at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial at later date in Brookside Cemetery. A reception will follow at Florence Legion.
Donations in mom’s memory may be made to Palliative Care Services, Cape Breton District Health Authority.
June’s family will be forever grateful to Dr. Michelle and Louise, Palliative Care, VON and the Cape Breton Homemakers as mom so lovingly called them the “home wreckers.” They allowed us to fulfil her wishes and care for her at home in her own bed. We never could have gathered through such a difficult time without you all. We would especially like to thank our dear Aunt Babes for all her love and devotion to mom right from the first day mom took sick until the very end.
We’ll love you forever mom.
