It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Melvin Bateman, age 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle on Thursday August 23, 2012 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Mel passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Born in North Sydney, Mel was the son of the late Harry and Mary (Skinner) Bateman, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney. Mel was employed with CN and Marine Atlantic in North Sydney retiring after 35 years of dedicated service. Mel devoted his retirement years to providing care to his beloved Elsie during her lengthy illness. He was well known in the community for his kindness and thoughtful gestures.
He is survived by his sons Wilson (Cindy), Welland ON., Richard (Heather), New Minas, Darren (Brenda), Kentville and daughter Sharon (Steve) Walker, Georges River, and his beloved grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother-in-law George (Verna) Collier, Sydney; sister-in-law Joanne Poirier, Sydney and also several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Mel was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, just two months ago, Elsie (Collier); his brothers Alex, Wilson, Sidney and sister Ruth (Al) Smith and brother-in-law Jack Poirier.
Special thanks to Dr. Allison Archibald for all the special care she showed our father and also special thanks to Dr. Patrick O’Grady.
There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service for Mel will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
