ISLAND, Arnold Jenkins age 97 years of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan passed away on Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Shaunavon Hospital & Care Centre. Arnold, the fourth child of William and Mary (Jenkins) Island, was born on November 18, 1914 in Wellington County, Erin, Ontario. In 1916, Arnold at the age of one and one-half years moved with his parents and older siblings, Austin, Elizabeth and Arthur, to the Scotsguard district. He took all his schooling at the Scotsguard School and transportation to school was usually by means of horses. After his parents moved to Shaunavon, Arnold continued to reside on the Island farm but would spend the winter months with his parents in their home in Shaunavon. He had stock and a hired man for a period of time, but was, for the most part of his life, a grain farmer. During the years when the crops failed he spent a fall harvesting in Manitoba and also at Star City. Arnold’s bachelorhood came to an end when on July 7, 1973, he married Audrey Timmons Gunderson, a school teacher. This meant no longer eating at Stella’s Diner in Scotsguard and strawberry jam sandwiches for lunch. They resided on the farm near Scotsguard in the spring and summer and in Shaunavon in the winter time and enjoyed traveling with many bus tour trips taken across Canada and into parts of the United States. Arnold in his younger years used to help his mother milk the cows. It is said, “He could milk a cow quicker than anyone.” He had a fondness for fox terrier dogs and “Teddy and Stubby” were his companions over the years. He loved horses and could talk for hours about all his encounters with them. He was even known to take over running the Island General Store in Scotsguard when his brother Arthur had to be away. Arnold enjoyed curling and proudly displayed his trophies. He enjoyed very much visiting with company. He could tell many stories of his youth and life growing up in Scotsguard with his siblings. He liked to recall all the interesting sites visited and the funny happenings on the many bus trips taken. Arnold will be remembered for the love and devotion given to his wife, his sense of honour and his gentlemanly manner. Arnold was a long time member of the Shaunavon Elks and Centre Street United Church. He was predeceased by his parents William and Mary Island, his siblings Austin, Arthur, Bruce and Elizabeth and his wife Audrey. Arnold is survived by his step-son Richard Gunderson and wife Carole, of Sundre, Alberta, three step-grandchildren Terry, Kim and Penny Lee as well as by several nieces and nephews and special friends Fred Farnworth and John Henrion. Anglican Funeral Services were held from Centre Street United Church in Shaunavon on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Mary Ann Boote officiating. Pallbearers were Richard Schlemko, Alex Dewhurst, Dan Island, Fred Farnworth, Jason Huss and George Simmons. Interment took place at Hillcrest Cemetery at Shaunavon.
