It is with great sadness and deep regret that we, the family announce the passing of Sam Jessome on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Georges River, he was the son of the late John J. and Jennie (MacSween) Jessome.
Sam was a faithful member of the United Baptist Church.
He was a much honoured Kiwanian and was instrumental in the formation of the Kiwanis Cape Breton Golden K and the formation of the Kiwanis Celidh Golden K. He served as president and secretary of the Sydney Kiwanis Club and was also distinguished past Nova Scotia Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis. Sam was awarded the Tablet of Honour by Kiwanis International and was the recipient of the Kiwanis Osgoode Fellowship.
Sam proudly served his country as a member of the Canadian Army from 1939 to 1968 in both the Royal Canadian Artillery and the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps, retiring with the rank of major. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12.
Sam was a 50-year member of the Masonic Temple Centennial Lodge in Edmonton, Alta.
He was employed by Devco for 15 years as an industrial relation officer.
Sam was a very intelligent man, well loved and will be sadly missed.
Sam is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Esther (Morrison) Jessome; daughter, Barbara (David) Hill, Tatamagouche; son, Donald (Celine) Jessome, Ottawa; two grandsons, Benjamin (Erin Leigh Bond) Hill, Dartmouth, and Jonathan Hill, Montreal.
Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased by his sister, Barbara and brothers, William, Lewis, Terrance and Chalmers.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 20 at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home Chapel, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev. Bob Hussey officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place in Harbourview Cemetery, South Haven.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society.
