It is with heartfelt sadness that we, the family of William Lloyd Bruce ‘Sonny’ MacPherson, announce his passing on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, with his loving family by his side.
Born in Sydney, he was a son of the late William and Violet (Ryan) MacPherson.
Sonny held various sales positions early in his career before he, along with his wife, Margaret, opened their own business, Island Vinyl Siding.
Born into a family with a rich history of piping, Sonny played his bagpipes for more than 60 years. His fondest memories were playing at his grandchildrens’ baptisms. Another highlight of his piping career was performing with the Cape Breton Highlanders Pipe Band at the grand opening of the Canso Causeway in 1953. Sonny was well known for his wonderful sense of humour, which continued well into his final hours, and his limitless generousity to both family members and friends.
Sonny is survived by his loving wife, Margaret (Delaney); sons, Bill (Karen) MacPherson, Mira, Bruce MacPherson, Sydney and daughter, Bernadette (Donnie) Johnston, Sydney River; brother, Courtney, Sydney; sisters, Margaret MacPherson and Jean LaBelle, both of Mira and Sally Ford, Ontario; grandchildren, Cale (Tamara) and Cory MacPherson, both of Mira; Marielle and Delaney Johnston, Sydney River; great-granddaughters, Talon and Avani MacPherson, Mira; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Besides his parents, Sonny was predeceased by his brother, Alexander ‘Sandy’.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation for the late William ‘Sonny’ MacPherson will be held Monday from 7-9 p.m. at S.W. Chant Funeral Home, Alexandra Street. Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating. A reception will take place at the funeral home. A private internment will follow at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sonny’s memory may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of one’s choice.
