It is with great sadness, that after a short but valiant struggle against cancer, Douglas age 62 died at his home in Umatilla, FL on Jan. 10, 2010 with his family at his bedside.
Douglas was born in Sydney on January 13, 1947, the son of Joseph and Cecilia (former Doucette nee Christmas) MacDonald. Douglas attended the Residential School in Shubenacadie and later attended school in Mabou. In later years, he obtained his Certificate in Legal Studies for Native People from Saskatchewan; attended St. F.X. University, Antigonish for a year before completing his B.A. at Carleton University, Ottawa in 1987.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Janice and daughter, Francis Marie of Umatilla, FL; son, Joe (Raine) of Eugene, OR; brother, Archie ‘Bear’ MacDonald, Membertou; sisters, Nora (Rheal) Plourde and Marinda MacDonald, both of Truro, Shirley (Wilfred) Ward of Eel Ground, N.B. and by many nieces and nephews. Douglas will be fondly remembered and missed by his grandchildren, Harley, Levi, Lance, Logan, Joey and Michael.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Noel-Bushette (Jean) Doucette and Gordon, Albert and Mervyn MacDonald; his godchild, Wilfred Mark Ward and his godparents, Grand Chief Donald Marshall and Susie Johnson.
Douglas had a varied working life starting work at a very young age. His first job was at the Chick-N-Coop restaurant in downtown Sydney. He joined the U.S.A.F. in 1963 eventually becoming a recruiter until his medical discharge in 1981. He was a member of the American Legion, a life member of the D.A.V. and a former member of Toastmasters. He also worked on the assembly line at General Motors in Framingham, Mass.
Upon his return to N.S. he was the band manager for Wagmatcook F.N. for a short time before working for I.C.S. in Halifax, later moving to Ottawa and finding employment at the Dept. of Indian Affairs in the Registration Unit. He moved to Umatilla in 1999 and at the time of his death was an employed at Camp Boggy Creek, Cassia, Fl (www.boggycreek.org) in the maintenance section. Douglas always said that his years at Boggy Creek were the most rewarding years of his working life. He enjoyed the work but also the friends and colleagues that he worked with on a daily basis.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the family home on 100 Membertou St. on Friday, Jan. 22, after 5 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Anthony Daniel Church, Sydney with interment at Membertou Gardens. This will be followed by a community feast and Salite at the Membertou Trade and Convention Center.
Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Ann’s Mission Church, mass offerings or donations to the Membertou breast cancer survivors would be gratefully appreciated.
