Meyer (Halpert) Sophia Maria

Date de décès : 30 septembre 2012

January 7, 1964 – September 30, 2012. Died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones.
Sophia embraced life with energy and enthusiasm. Blessed with keen intelligence, immense curiosity, and prodigious talent, she was a multi-faceted artist and individual who continued to create works of beauty and humor up until the last few days of her existence.
Perhaps best known for the technical excellence and pleasing shapes of the pottery she produced in her studio on Bell Island, her whimsical sculptures and colorful hand painted silk scarves were also popular. She drew, painted, took countless photographs, and wrote poetry.
Inspired by the natural world, she was happiest when hiking with the dog(s) in the woods or along the coastline, searching for edible mushrooms in season, or swimming in the ponds.
A voracious reader and a vigorous researcher, she acquired a considerable depth of knowledge in a broad range of subjects. An avid gardener, she became an expert in certain plant varieties. An animal lover, she studied their husbandry. Among other things, she was a trained chef, a computer nerd, and a bookbinder.
Sophia also believed in community service and volunteered variously as a Girl Guide leader, chairperson of the local school board, chairperson of the Bell Island Community Library, and was an active member on the board of The Bell Island Heritage Society and Community Museum.
She leaves three lovely and talented daughters (of whom she was justly proud)-- Maggie, Jessie, and Sara. A brother, Max, and a circle of friends that is international in scope. Her spirit lives on, and continues to inspire her adoring husband, Nicholas Halpert.
A gathering to celebrate Sophia’s life will be held Sunday, October 7, at our home in St. John’s -- 26 Roche Street, from 2 p.m.
