It is with heavy hearts that the family announce the sudden passing of John Neil Ferguson at home in Dartmouth on Oct. 6, 2012.
John was the eldest son of Lorraine (Dares) and the late Neil John Ferguson, Caribou Marsh, Cape Breton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Lois (Wadman); daughter, Sheila, Brisbane, Australia; son, Graham, Halifax; sister, Barbara MacMullin (Warren), Meadows Road, Sydney; brother, Weldon (Barbara), Pictou County; niece Brandy, nephews, Logan, Kyle, Earl and grandnephew, Austin.
John graduated from Riverview High School, Sydney River, and briefly attended Xavier College. It was while at Xavier that John followed his passion for folk and Celtic music. He was a founding member of both Miller’s Jug and Kiltarlity, but was best known as part of the popular Halifax-based band McGinty for 35 years with Don Moore, the late David Hickey, Joe Breen and manager Bob Dooley.
He was admired for his extensive knowledge of folk songs, fiddle tunes and quick recall of dates and stories.
John has several recordings with McGinty and with Buddy MacDonald, Roger Stone, solo albums and others.
He travelled extensively during his career in Canada, U.S.A., Dominican Republic, Iceland, Ireland, and Luxembourg.
John loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing in Cape Breton. He enjoyed entertaining at home, treating family and friends to his culinary talents to rave reviews. John adored his family. He was extremely proud of Sheila and Graham and very supportive of their talents and endeavours.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of John’s life will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax, 902-455-0531 on Monday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. Reception to follow from 3-7 p.m.
Donations may be made in John’s memory to the Canadian Hemophilia Society or Prostate Cancer Canada.
