BABIN, Hector Richard – 52, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Yarmouth Co., passed away after a courageous battle with cancer, on Thursday, November 15, 2012 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital with his family at his side. Born June 12, 1960 in Yarmouth, he was a son of Richard Babin, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, and the late Josephine (Surette) Babin. Hector began working as a lobster fisherman, and subsequently became a licensed carpenter, having worked most recently with Graham Construction, after having also worked with his brother-in-law, Eric. As of late, he also worked for the CSAP as a casual bus driver. Hector was first and foremost a devoted family man – his life revolved around his wife and kids, and did so to the very end. However, he also made time for other organizations, namely, the Eel Brook and Districts Fire Department, where he served as Chief from 1989 until the time of his death. The fire service played a huge part in Hector’s life, having joined when he was only 16 years old. He was a the President of the Argyle Municipal Firefighter’s Association, was a member of Argyle E.M.O. and of the Yarmouth County Mutual Aid Association and was the representative for Yarmouth County as director of the Fire Services Association of Nova Scotia (FSANS). Hector was also a very respected minor hockey and soccer coach, having led many teams to many victories. He began coaching minor hockey when his son joined in 1994, and coached House League, Rep. and Junior ‘C’ teams throughout the years. He began coaching soccer in 2004, having coached the Jeux de l’Acadie teams, after which he worked alongside his daughter (the coach), as assistant coach for the Par-en-Bas soccer team two years ago. He was very involved in Les Grands Jeux de l’Acadie this past summer, both with the fire department barbeque fundraiser, and as a bus driver. Whenever he could, Hector loved spending time logging, cutting wood and relaxing at the hunting camp. He also enjoyed hunting, and will certainly be remembered for setting eel traps and kiack fishing at Eel Lake, something he enjoyed doing for many years, but especially with his son these last few years. These last few years also found Hector trying his hand at a bit of farming. He raised chickens, hens and turkeys. He was also known for breeding and selling Little River duck dogs, a breed that was part of his family since his childhood. He will no doubt be missed by his two loving dogs, Rosie and Penney. Finally, it should be mentioned that Hector loved food - both preparing and eating. Hector leaves behind a loving family, namely his dad, Richard, as well as his loving and devoted wife of 26 years, Darlene (Nickerson) Babin, as well as his adoring children, Justine Babin, Halifax, and Jeremy Babin, at home. He also leaves behind his three loving sisters, Gisèle (Eric) Vacon, Eel Brook, Zoé (Ron) Hanson and Gaëtane (Warren) Moulaison, both of Halifax. He was also a very special uncle, son/brother-in-law. Visitation took place from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, with prayers at 8:00 p.m., both at H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at Saint Anne’s Catholic Church, Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau at 10:30 a.m., Monday, November 19, Father Albéni d’Entremont and Deacon Bruce Hubbard officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. It was requested that there be family flowers only.
