Anna Rita (MacMillan) Cummings

Anna Rita (MacMillan) Cummings

Lieu de naissance : East Bay
Date de naissance : 6 novembre 1916

Date de décès : 22 décembre 2012

After a long life filled with dedication, determination and faith which saw her through many joys and adversities in her life, our mother, Anna (Anna Rita MacMillan) Cummings passed away on Dec. 22, 2012, at Seaview Manor in Glace Bay, N.S. Anna was a former resident of Fenton Avenue, New Waterford.
The daughter of Angus and Sarah (MacNeil) MacMillan, she was born in East Bay N.S. on Nov. 6, 1916. At an early age, she and her family moved to Sydney for a short time and then settled in Reserve Mines, N.S. Having been home-schooled by her father, this move gave her the opportunity for formal education which she thoroughly enjoyed.
After completion of high school, she worked in the Metropolitan store in Glace Bay and later at the Co-Op store in Reserve Mines. Lifelong friendships were developed at each location.
In 1943, she married the love of her life, Raymond, and then said good-bye to him as he served overseas in the Second World War. Upon his return, they lived in Lingan, N.S., and then settled permanently in New Waterford, N.S., where they raised their family.
She served her community by collecting for various organizations, volunteering at local events and quietly supporting several favourite charities. She was a life long member of the Catholic Women’s League of the former Parish of Saint Agnes in New Waterford and served for many years as their treasurer. For her devotion to that organization, she was presented with their Maple Leaf Service Pin.
She possessed a remarkable memory and was well read on a large variety of subjects. In keeping with her proud Scottish heritage, she attended Gaelic classes in New Waterford and enjoyed singing Gaelic songs. She loved mathematics and even in her 90s could still correct her children’s addition during games of cribbage. She could turn her hand to anything and was an excellent cook, seamstress and money manager.
Left with fond memories and a sense of gratitude are her children, Sheila, New Waterford, Doreen (Darius Powell), Howie Centre, Cyril (Catherine) Columbia, Alabama U.S.A., and Joan (Rick Pierrynowski), Sydney River; her daughter-in-law, Julie Cummings, Sydney; her five grandchildren, Andrea Powell Crosbie (Basil), Iain Powell (Melinda Kinney), Jonathan Cummings, Ainslie Pierrynowski and Andrew Pierrynowski; her four great-grandchildren, Matthew, Ella, Nathan, Isaac and a ‘grand-dog’ Muffin. Also surviving are her brother-in-law, Greg (Zel) Cummings, Halifax; her sister-in-law, Etheleen Cummings, Halifax; and nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Raymond in 1993, her son, Thomas in 2000, two infant children and her sister, Mary (John) MacDougall in 1990.
There will be no visitation. Her funeral Mass will be on Saturday, Dec.29, 2012, in St. Leonard Church on Mt. Carmel Avenue at 10 a.m. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery. A reception will take place at St. Leonard Parish Hall on Convent Street immediately afterward. All are invited to attend.
Donations in her memory to any charity would be greatly appreciated.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford.
Online condolences to the family can be expressed at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
