Betty Myra Beryl (Dunlop) Hoegg, RN, 89, of Stellarton, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2013, in the Aberdeen Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on February 19, 1923 at Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, she was the third child of the late Harold Alexander Dunlop and Beryl Lapham (Fader) Dunlop.
Betty lived her teenage years in Amherst, graduating from Amherst Academy in 1941. In 1945, she became a proud graduate of the Aberdeen Hospital School of Nursing, New Glasgow. While in training, she met her husband-to-be, Robert E. Hoegg and they were married in 1945. As founding members of the Belmont Housing Co-op, Betty and Bob built their own home in Stellarton, where she lived from 1947 until 2005, the last of the original co-op group to still be living there. Betty was an active member of Christ Anglican Church, and the Aberdeen Hospital Alumnae Association and Auxiliary. She was a Life Member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Until just past her 89th birthday, she brought her sunny personality to the YMCA where she shared in the camaraderie of the special group of Early Bird swimmers. A crackerjack bridge player, competitive Scrabble player, and avid gardener, with indomitable spirit she loved life and was game for any adventure.
Betty was predeceased by her husband, Robert, in 1995; daughter, Nancy Jeanette, in 2003; and by her siblings: Dawson, Audrey and Raymond Dunlop.
She will be missed by her daughters and their husbands: Judith (Peter Ryan), Caribou Island, NS and Lois (Chesley Crosbie), St. John’s NL; and their daughters: Ariana Ryan and Charlotte, Catherine, and Rachel Crosbie. She is also survived by sisters-in-law: Sylvia Dunlop, Hilda Hoegg, and Marquerite Fraser, and brothers-in-law John Hoegg and R.A. “Tim” Hoegg, several nieces, nephews, godchildren, and a wide circle of friends.
In recent months, Betty enjoyed the loving care and companionship of Mary Jane MacKenzie, for which her family is truly appreciative. The family is grateful also to the staff of High Crest Home for their goodness to Mum during the past seven months while she was a guest there.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 5 at 2 p.m., at Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton. Visitation will be at the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton on Friday, January 4 from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m.
