Stephen J. MacNeil, 88, of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 58 years by his side, on Jan. 4, 2013.
Born in Sydney, N.S., he was a son of the late John and Mary (MacDonald). Stephen is survived by his wife, Amelia (Murphy), Dartmouth; children, Rob (Ada), Sechelt, B.C., Cathy (Joe Conway) and John (Michael Calvert-Kahane), Toronto; grandchildren, Thomas, Erin, Ian and Liam; brother, Bernie, Calgary and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by sisters, Kay, Peg, Loretta and Mary; brothers, John, Amos and Albert.
‘Steve’ was happiest when he was helping others and was involved in many charities especially ones that focused on the needy and poor including Save the Children and The Food Bank of N.S. He was a hard and tireless worker and was a man of integrity who always maintained a positive disposition. He was a founding member of the Dartmouth Chapter of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society and a member of the honour guard with the Knights of Columbus of St. Paul's Parish. His spirit, “as good as gold” has taken his final journey and is now free.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth.

A memorial service was held at St Paul's Church, 199 Windmill Rd., on Thursday Jan. 10, 2013. A private family interment will take place in North Sydney at a later date.

The family would like to thank the 3rd floor nursing staff at Glasgow Hall for their excellent care and especially Cathy Hamilton (Joe's sister) for her loving care and attention to dad and our mom.
