Joseph Murray
Murray, Joseph Bernard- 98, of Parrsboro and Halifax, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at Melville Lodge, Halifax.
Born Dec. 19, 1914 in Lakelands, Cumberland County, Joe was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was the eldest son of the late William and Emma (Morris) Murray.
Joe will be remembered fondly for his accomplishments as a long distance runner and for his vivid poetry recitations. Joe completed the Boston Marathon twice, as well as many other races, and ran until he was well into his seventies. The family farm in Lakelands was always home for Joe but he also had many friends in Halifax where he spent his later years, in particular John MacRae, Patricia Conrad, and Frank Levy.
Surviving are 12 nieces and nephews, Margaret Ann Rouse, Catherine Rouse, Michael Rouse, Anne Murray Orr, Patricia Murray, Barbara Motut, Nancy Murray-Smith, Rosemary Murray-Fenton, Bernard Hoganson, Helen Hoganson, Emily Gildner, and Ann Edwards, as well as sister-in-law Joyce Murray and brother-in-law Cyril Hoganson. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by his siblings, Elizabeth Hebb, Thomas Murray, and Margaret Hoganson, and his nephews Tom Hoganson and William (Billy) Rouse. A special thank you to the staff of Melville Lodge for their kindness during Joe’s time there.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 7 to 9 pm at St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church in Parrsboro. The funeral will be on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 am in St. Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church, with Rev. Phil Thibodeau officiating. A reception will follow in the parish hall. Burial will be in St. Brigid’s Cemetery in the spring.
