MARTENS, Katherine Elsie, age 94, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2013, at the Herbert Integrated Health Facility. Katherine was born on January 27, 1918, to Bernhard and Maria Giesbrecht in Hochfeld, Russia. She immigrated to Canada in 1924, and was adopted by Peter and Maria Goertzen. Katherine married Jacob Martens in 1953. They farmed in the Herbert area until retirement in 1993. Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Jake; her four sisters, Elizabeth Dyck, Helen Thiessen, Susie Dyck and Mary Redekop. She leaves to cherish her legacy her three daughters, Jennifer (Brian) Shygera - Luke, Katie: Florence (Reg) Walde - Mitch (Tess), Jeryn: Connie (Marcel) Redekop - Justin (Alicia) - John, Cody. The Funeral Service was held on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm from the Mennonite Brethren Church, Herbert, SK with Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating. The pianist for the service was Jennifer Shygera with the congregation singing, “Blessed Assurance”. Justin Redekop read the obituary and the scripture reading from Psalm 89:1-8 and was read by Cody Redekop. Special music was brought by Florence Walde singing, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and by Katie Shygera singing, “Jesus Draw Me Ever Nearer”. The eulogy and tributes were shared by Connie Redekop and Jennifer Shygera along with a PowerPoint presentation. The ushers in the church were Curt Chickoski and Rudi Pipke. The Interment Service preceded the Funeral Service and was held at the Herbert Cemetery with the following grandchildren serving as pallbearers, Luke Shygera, Katie Shygera, Mitch Walde, Jeryn Walde, Justin Redekop and Cody Redekop.
