It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, Norman Courtney at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013.
He was born in Cape North, Victoria County on May 5, 1919. Dad worked many years in the Dingwall Gypsum Quarry driving trucks and dozers. He was drafted to the army where he served as a gunner for three years in Quebec and Halifax. He also worked with Department of Transportation for 26 years on the grader and snow plow. Dad enjoyed many hours on his beloved tractor in Courtney’s field, planting potatoes and cutting his winter’s wood. He would often arrive home with a pail full of berries. He was also known for the love of telling stories of his childhood, especially to the grandchildren.
Dad is survived by his wife of 67 years, Effie Courtney; and children Norma (Bob) Bebluk, Bruce (Corinne) Courtney, Candis (Hal) Bungay and grandchildren: Courtney, Kim, Damon, Logan, Brenan and Alana.
He was predeceased by his parents, Archie and Effie Courtney; his brothers, Donald, Neil, Jim, Murdock, Dave, Melvin and sister, Florence.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to the Home Support Workers and all the staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital.
