Rev. Maj. (Ret.) Clifford Bisson, CD, son of the late Lubin and Sophie (Aucoin) Bisson, passed away peacefully on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010. He leaves to mourn his sisters, Margaret Driscoll, Ontario, Bernadette (Ed) Ingham and Rose (Dan) McMullin, both of Glace Bay; brother, Lubin (Joan), Ontario; brothers-in-law, Erwin MacMaster and Alex Chisholm; sisters-in-law, Mary and Marie; nieces, nephews and many close friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Theresa MacMaster and Betty Chisholm, brothers, Wilfred, Melvin and Danny, brother-in-law, Ed Driscoll and sister-in-law, Doris. Fr. Bisson was a graduate of St. Anne’s High School. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1950; attended Grand Seminary in Quebec in preparation for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on June 12, 1954, in St. Ninian’s Cathedral by the late Bishop John R. McDonald.
Fr. Bisson served as an assistant priest in various parishes in the diocese including Mount Carmel, New Waterford, Holy Guardian Angels, L’Ardoise, St. Theresa, Sydney, St. John the Baptist, New Glasgow, Villa Madonna Retreat House, St. Stephen’s, Florence, St. Peter’s, Port Hood, and St. John’s, Glace Bay. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1964 and served as chaplain (RC) at the following bases: CFB Gagetown, CFB Halifax, CFB Calgary, CFB Esquimalt, CFB Chatham, CFB Petawawa and CFB Cornwallis. His overseas postings included NATO service in Lars, Germany, UN peacekeeping duties in Cyprus, the Golan Heights and Israel. Fr. Bisson retired from the regular Forces in September 1987. Upon retirement, Fr. Bisson worked part time with the Archdiocese of Halifax and replaced base chaplains from coast to coast, who were absent from their base on peacekeeping duties. He served in this capacity until 1998. His service with the Department of National Defence spanned 33 years. He served his country with pride and dedication to duty. Upon returning to Glace Bay, Fr. Bisson joined John Bernard Croak VC Branch 3, Royal Canadian Legion, where he served until his passing, and served the local parishes here in an on-call capacity.
Visitation for Fr. Cliff will be held this evening from 7-9 p.m. in Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. The vigil service will commence at 7 p.m., Sunday in St. Anne’s Church, Glace Bay. Funeral Mass of Resurrection will be offered Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at 11 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church with Bishop Brian Dunn and other priests concelebrating. Burial to follow in Holy Family Cemetery.
