JORDAN, AVON GILFORD - May 27, 1921 - March 3, 2013 - Avon G. Jordan died peacefully on Sunday, March 3 at the Dr Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Born on May 27, 1921 in Bear Island, NB, he was a son of the late Roy and Laura (McLean) Jordan and husband of the late Mary (Doherty) Jordan. Avon is survived by his brother Millard Jordan (Isabel) of Bear Island; several nieces and nephews and by Leanne Targett, his caregiver and friend. Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by brothers Olen (Glenna) and Aubrey and niece Carol Jordan. Avon grew up on the family farm and enlisted for service in WWII. He waded ashore with the Canadians on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Avon and Mary lived in Fredericton, where Avon was employed with the Department of Natural Resources as a Forest Ranger. After retirement Avon pursued his interests in genealogy and gardening, having a client list of lawns to cut and hedges to trim. Avon was generous, and more than once responded to articles in the paper when someone’s power had been cut off. Avon was a man of faith, and was a regular attender at St. Dunstan's in his healthier years. Special appreciation is extended to Avon’s “family” at the Villa and to Leanne for their excellent care. Avon was very proud of being invited to turn the sod for the new Villa and showed his photos often of him with Bonnie and all the dignitaries present on the occasion.
A funeral service will be held at the J. A. McAdam Memorial Chapel on Thursday, March 7 at 11:00 am with Rev. Owen Burns officiating. A legion tribute will be conducted by The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #4 immediately following the service. Following the service, interment will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Saint John at 2:00 pm.
