It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our dear son, husband, father, brother, nephew, cousin and friend, on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, in Edmonton. Alta.
Jay was born in Sydney, N.S., to proud parents Jimmy and Nancy (DeBreau) Smith.
Jay was known far and wide not only for his musical talents which bloomed from a young age, but also for his quick wit and charm. As a gifted songwriter, guitar player and performer, Jay had a presence that could light up the smallest room or the largest stage. Jay captured the hearts of almost everyone he met and nurtured all of those friendships along the way. Jay was the proud father of two beautiful young children, Noah and Amy, who were his inspiration.
Jay will be sadly missed by his parents, Michael and Nancy Smith; wife, Allison (Saunders) and children, Noah James and Amy Marie; sister, Michelle (Darren) Fraser; in-laws, Jim and Annette Saunders; aunts and uncles, Kay, Junior, Donnie, Connie, Lou, Tom, Martin, Robbie, Pat, Louis, Dorothy, Joyce, Moe, Wayne, Pat, Lawrence, Rita and Heather; cousins, Brenda, Patti, Donnie, Tracey, Tammy, Hector, Glenna, Alton, Rosie, Shawna, Kerry, John-Blair, Glen, Lawrence, Darren and Diane. Jay is also survived by his musical family and special friend Megan Peters.
He will be forever and fondly remembered by all the family, friends and fans whose hearts he touched along the way.
Jay was predeceased by both maternal and paternal grandparents, uncles, Victor and John and cousin, Ronnie.
Visitation will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Funeral Mass will take place Friday, April 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Holy Redeemer Church, Whitney Pier, with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Interment to follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
