VAN BUSKIRK: Shirley Mildred Van Buskirk passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the Kyle Health Centre. Shirley was born to Jack and Reta (Douglas) Moir on April 17, 1930 at Wadena, SK. The family lived in Wood Mountain, where her father was the C.P.R. agent and Shirley took her schooling, grades one to eleven. Her first grade teacher was Mrs. Tess Pierce. Shirley finished her grade twelve in Kyle, where her father was Station agent. This is also when Shirley met Sam. Shirley went to Teacher's College in Moose Jaw and taught in Consul, SK that was a one-room school of 45 students. Shirley then went back to Teacher's College and University for Education. Shirley's philosophy was "if you wanted to settle your kids down, go get a book and read then a story". Shirley married Sam Van Buskirk on October 18, 1951 in Kyle. They celebrated their 61st anniversary in 2012. Shirley was a lifetime member of Eastern Star and Royal Purple. Shirley and Sam's love of Clearwater Lake started when they rented Henry Renton' s cabin on the east side. Shirley and Sam purchased a lot on the west side in 1963. They brought in a bunkhouse purchased from Bill Lytle. This held the six of them, plus a cat and a dog. Sam devised a triple bunk bed for Leslie, Jackie and Craig. Baby Carole slept in the carriage with Shirley and Sam sleeping on a fold out T-Eaton couch. They moved up into a bigger cabin, which was the Tuberose Teacherage. It was bigger then the old blue house in town. We came to the lake with the latest camping appliances, with a fridge made out of a wooden box in the ground. That didn't last long when a dog ran off with the contents. Life at the lake in summer was like heaven with swimming lessons, lake friends and listening to the Saturday night music coming from the round hall at the main beach. Shirley and Sam had the only cabin at that time that had running water that was supplied from a water-tank on the back of a 38 Dodge. There were many gatherings for birthday parties and family reunions. Shirley's other loves were birds, flowers, geneology and minor hockey. Shirley supplied jackets and toques for the 2007/08 Pee Wee team. She was their number one fan. She loved the Saskatchewan Roughriders and her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Shirley was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband Sam, her son Craig (Marsha) and granddaughters Alexis (Aron) and Jessica, her daughter Jackie (Jack) and granddaughters Meghan and Kristen, her daughter Leslie (Henry) and granddaughter Lisa, grandson Steven (Fewilyn) and great granddaughter Samantha, her daughter Carole (John) and grandson Bevan (Amanda) and great grandson Emery, and grandson Ian and granddaughter Linnae. The family wants to thank the Kyle Health Centre staff for all their love and special care and attention that they gave Shirley daily over the past three years. In her memory, memorial donations may be made to Kyle Minor Hockey. A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday July 20, 2013 at the Van Buskirk cabin, #142 at 2:00 p.m. lead by Jim McNaughton. Warren's Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
