WILMOT - On April 6, 2013, John Donald Wilmot passed away at the age of 86, in Calgary, Alberta. Don was born on a farm in the south Carnduff, SK. area, and a twin on October 12, 1926. He attended Lilac school and later Carnduff School. Shortages of teachers after the Second World War sent Don to back to school to become an 8 week wonder. He earned a temporary teaching certificate, teaching some students that were older than he was at Glencoe School, a rural school. He went back the next summer and completed his training to get his permanent teaching certificate. 1948 he went to Grand Forks, North Dakota to get his degree in education. He taught at Glencoe, Carievale, Radville, Gainsborough, and Swift Current schools. In Gainsborough, he developed an interest in teaching French that continued for the rest of his teaching career. His studies of French took him to Quebec and France. In 1959, he married Dorothy Way of Mankota. He was devoted to his family, including his nieces and nephews. Don spent his leisure hours, doing carpentry, cross-stitch, fishing, golf, cross country and downhill skiing, but he was addicted to playing bridge, or just about any card game. Volunteering was a big part of his life but when he retired, many organizations came out of the woodwork looking for his help. I believe he did not say ‘NO’ to anyone who asked for his help. He claimed to be busier after retirement than when he was working. He had endless energy when it came to Grace United Church and later Kiwanis. In 2008, Don and Dorothy moved from Swift Current, SK to Okotoks, AB to be near their grandson, Joey. Shortly after, his health started to decline. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, son Wayde, grandson Joey, brothers Doug(twin) and Hugh, sisters Nell Barber and Nilda Cole, sister in-law Jean Wilmot, brother in-law Don Gillespie and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favourite charity. Celebration of life services will be held in Swift Current and Carnduff at later dates.
