Robert Gillis, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012 at his home in London, after a brief illness.
Born in Sydney, he was the youngest son of the late Mary (MacAdam) and Hugh Gillis of St. Mary’s parish, East Bay.
He is survived by his wife, Hannah (MacMillan) and his five stepchildren, Elie, Tollene (Doug), Ron (Trish), Ken (Anna) and Rick (Tanya), all of London; brothers, Hugh (Doris), Antigonish, Allan (Judy), Toronto; sisters, Genevieve, Carmel, Sydney, Clare (Harvey), Halifax. He also leave behind brothers-in-law, Donnie, Kenneth; Leo and Cecil MacMillan; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brother, Donald; sisters, Leone and Margaret, who died in infancy; his special niece, Margaret Jean MacEachern and his mother and father-in-law, Mary and Kennie MacMillan.
Robert graduated from Sydney Academy and attended Xavier Junior College. He was a proud member of the Sydney Academy Pipe Band and later the Cape Breton Highlanders Pipe Band. He worked for 40 years in the accounting department of Tender Tootsies, London, where he made lasting friendships.
He will always be remembered by his family and friends for his kindness, his gentleness and his keen sense of humour.
A family committal service will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks, on Friday, April 12, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, East Bay, at 4 p.m. with Fr. Frank Abbass officiating. A reception will follow at St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
