Owen Orland Smith, 84, of Amherst passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on Sunday evening, April 7, 2013 while surrounded by his loving and devoted family.
Born December 11, 1928 in Springhill, NS, Owen was a son of the late Ottie and Dora (Gilroy) Smith.
Owen began his career at the Springhill mines and later relocated to Ontario where he worked for Dunlop Tire and lastly drove city buses for Oshawa Transit until his retirement in 1990.
One of Owen greatest love was spending his winters in Florida with his wife, where he enjoyed shuffleboard and watching the Blue Jays. They formed long lasting relationships with folks from all regions of the U.S. and Canada. He also enjoyed his times at the cottage in Cameron Beach, Port Howe.
Owen was an amazing and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and will be sadly missed by all that knew him.
Owen will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine (Stonehouse); beloved sons, Raymond (Theresa), Amherst and Brian (Elizabeth) Ottawa, ON; special grandchildren, Phillip (Mellisa), Carly (Jorrit), Noel (Andrea), Erika (Shaun) and Brett; great grandchildren, Josslyn, Daken, Brianna and Vera; loving, siblings, Leona (Ken) Webb, Sussex, NB; Ralph (Marilyn) and David (Betty) both of Truro, NS; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 12, 2013 from 12:00 (noon) immediately followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. in the Amherst Wesleyan Church, 50 Cornwall Ave, Amherst with Rev. Raymond Fancy officiating. Reception will follow in the church hall.
Family flowers only. Memorial contributions in Owen’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
