Agnes Spencer, 91, of Broughton Road, Broughton, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. At the time of her passing, Agnes was living at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney.
Born in Mira, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Sikora) Mrazek.
Her parents hailed from Poland and taught her of her rich Polish culture.
Agnes was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a friend. Agnes lost her beloved husband, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Spencer at the young age of 36 in a motor vehicle accident. She showed true determination and courage and put forth a commendable work ethic raising her eight children on her own. She kept very busy cooking, baking, sewing, gardening which she truly enjoyed and tending to her family’s chickens and pigs at home. Agnes also spent about twenty years driving children from Broughton to school in Albert Bridge, in her own car.
Agnes was a member of the Mira Ferry Catholic Church. She belonged to a dart league and bowled during her adult years. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, picnics and reading a good book, especially Harlequin romance novels. In her youth, Agnes loved to skate, dance, swim, play the mouth organ, accordion, and go for drives with family and friends. Mom was a lovely lady and enjoyed spending one on one time with a friendly visitor.
Agnes is survived by her eight children, Donna (Kenny) Smith, Birch Grove, Alex (Ann), Broughton, Victor (Betty-Lou), Tower Road, Sheila Penny (Blackie), Broughton, Edith (Fred) Locke, New Brunswick, Shannon (Cathy), Broughton, Brian, Sydney, Tony (Sarah), Ontario; a very special daughter-in-law, Leona, Morrison Road; sister-in-law, Dorothy, Horne’s Road; 17 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Agnes is also survived by a sister, Millie (late Gussie), Glace Bay; and a brother, Joe (Shirley), Horne’s Road.
Besides her parents and husband, Agnes was predeceased by siblings, Bert, Ernest, Rudolph, Mary, Florence and a twin sister, Dorothy, sisters, Albina, Christina, Jennie and a special friend, Katie MacDonald.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A funeral service, officiated by Rev. Norman MacPhee will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home Chapel, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A reception will be held in the funeral home immediately following the service. Interment in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Mira.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Palliative Care, Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Despite the hardships in her life with the loss of her husband at a young age, she remained a great mom to her children.
