JONES: Katharina, It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katharina Jones on April 2, 2013, at St. Paul’s Hospital, Saskatoon. Katharina Jones was born September 24, 1930, near Beechy to Frank and Mary Smalcel, who had emigrated from Yugoslavia. Kate, as she was known, grew up on the farm with her sisters, Mary and Anne. School days were spent at Jonesville School for the first eight years, followed by two years of High School in Beechy. Kate was her father’s right hand girl on the farm; she loved working along side of him and was not afraid to attempt any type of work. It was not too long before a prospective husband, Ted Jones, from down the road came a courting and soon Kate and Ted were on the train heading to Saskatoon to be married. Upon their return to Beechy, they made their home in the hills south of town. There they raised cattle, horses, pigs and sheep. Kate also raised turkeys and chickens. She sold eggs, milked cows and shipped cream. Three children came along to complete the family: Alfred, Virginia and Frank. Kate loved being involved in the community and was a member of the UCW, Beechy Homemakers, Home & School and the local School Board. Gardening was a passion of hers, be it turnips, flowers, or the fruit trees. She spent many hours picking Saskatoons, canning them, and making pies. She was an exceptional cook and baker. When the fair would come around every summer, she would be baking buns, bread, cinnamon rolls, chocolate cakes, white cakes, canning, and gathering veggies from the garden or a bouquet of wild flowers from the hills. Her kids would all be excited to see how well she had done, and of course everything was worthy of first prize to them. Fall meant many hours of hauling grain which was like a holiday for her. Meanwhile, the apples would be ripening on the trees, so more canning was done and delicious pies were made. Kate was not afraid of hard work and the day was not complete until everything was clean and put in its place then, it was time to put her feet up and relax. Kate loved country and western music…..Wilf Carter, Hank Snow and Charlie Pride. She also loved to curl and watch curling bonspiels. She followed all of the Canadian teams every year during the winter. Her memory of local history was remarkable, and if she was questioned about a date, out would come the History Books, and usually she was right. In the early 80’s, Kate and Ted holidayed in Arizona and Texas one winter, and in 1983 she went to New Zealand with Allan, Virginia and Alexis. These travels were enjoyable and gave her many good memories. Over the years many little nieces, nephews, and cousins in the family would come visit the farm. These were very enjoyable times for her; she loved them all and had many happy memories. As her children grew up and started families, Kate spent many hours playing with her grandchildren. She would spoil them with chocolates, presents, TV Dinners, and lots of hugs and kisses. Sometimes she would take them to Jonesville School to play or let them pretend to be cooks and mix various ingredients in a bowl. She taught them how to apply lipstick, how to win a game of Shanghai Rummy, and she even let some of them practice driving her car. When great grandchildren came around, her face would light up to see them play. It made her very happy, even when she was no longer feeling young and sprightly anymore. Kate was a strong woman who loved her home in the hills, where she lived for almost 65 years. She worked hard and was always available to lend a helping hand to family and friends. Not too many years ago she was still making pies and donating them to the local community auction. Her presence will be greatly missed. Her shoes will be hard to fill. We are so thankful for having had her in our lives. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia (Allan) Horn, and son, Frank (Annette) Jones; her grandchildren, Alexis (Marc) Bourassa, Sheena (Tim Hunt) Horn, Morgan (Tanya) Horn, and Dylan Jones; her great grandchildren, Arden and Ruby Bourassa, Royce Horn-Hunt, Justine and Jade Horn, and Kaleb Jones; her sister, Anne (Arley) Moen and Family; her cousin, Ervin Smalcel & Family; and nieces and nephews. Kate is predeceased by her husband, Ted; her son Alfred; her daughter-in-law, Darcy Jones; her parents, Frank & Mary Smalcel; her sister, Mary (Art) Lawes; and nephew Ernie Lawes. A funeral service was held April 6, 2013, at the Beechy United Church, and an internment at Collins Cemetery, in care of Outlook Funeral Chapel.
