It is with much sadness that the family of John Hawryluk announce his sudden and unexpected passing on April 27, 2013.
John was born in Port Arthur, Ont., Nov. 11, 1934, to parents William and Antonia Hawryluk originally from the Ukraine, who eventually moved to Cape Breton.
John spent his childhood years in Whitney Pier, N.S., then on Grand Lake Road in Sydney, N.S., and was a proud “Caper”.
John is survived by his loving wife Shirley; his children, Jo-Anne Curtis (Terry), John Keith, Kevin (Stephanie) and Robert; grandchildren, Robin and Brianna, his adopted grandson Jason and by one great-grandchild, Ethan John; brothers, Fred and Fred Jr. both from Sydney, N.S., and by several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents John was predeceased by his sister Anne MacLeod of Glace Bay, N.S.
John began his business career in the basement of his home in Moncton, N.B. in 1962 as the owner-operator or Arrow Metal Products Ltd., moved his business to its present 251 Mill Rd. location in the early 70s, was a visionary leader and innovator in the window and door industry, and the first company to introduce Vinyl products to the construction industry in Atlantic Canada.
In 2008, he turned his company over to his children who formed Arrow Windows, Doors & More and Best Buy Doors Inc. and his legacy lives on. John was a talented hockey player, played for many teams throughout his career. His hockey number and name is prominently displayed in the Hockey Hall of Fame in the arena in Glace Bay, N.S.
John was an avid hunter and fisherman who spent many weekends at his camp on the Miramichi River in Blackville, N.B., with his special friend, Bob Evans. He also enjoyed various outings with his many friends on hunting and fishing trips to various locations throughout Canada.
John and Shirley travelled extensively through the U.S. following the NASCAR circuit with dear friends, Gary (Sugar Man) Bursey and his wife Rhonda. John was a member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation and Ducks Unlimited, and contributed to numerous charities throughout his lifetime.
There will be no visitation by his request and family flowers only.
Memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Friends of The Moncton Hospital, Shediac Bay Community Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor’s choice and would be appreciated by the family.
Funeral service will be held in the chapel of Fair Haven Funeral Home on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Brock Symonds officiating. A reception to celebrate John’s life will be held in the Garden View Reception Room at Fair Haven Funeral Home.
