Rev. Dr. Donald Campbell
Lieu de naissance : Sydney
Date de décès : 29 avril 2013
Father Donald Campbell, 88, passed away on April 29, 2013 at Harbourstone residence.
A native of Sydney, Father Donald Fraser Campbell was the son of the late Judge Andrew Campbell and Pearl Curry. After graduating from St. F.X. University, he studied theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained on June 12, 1949. He returned to C.U.A. where he obtained a doctorate in education. He taught education and psychology at St. F.X., where he eventually became Dean of Arts.
From St. F.X., he returned to Sydney to become principal of Xavier College, where he quickly became involved in the movement to establish a university in Cape Breton. When this came to fruition he was the founding president of the University College of Cape Breton, serving two terms as president before returning to the classroom to teach Psychology.
As first president, he oversaw a significant building program and steered the new university through its early development. Several of his signature pieces include the art gallery, the Boardmore theatre, and the Beaton Institute, along with a number of other community institutes.
Personally he was a great fan of both sports and the arts, and on his retirement was given a life-long seat in the Boardmore Theatre. He was physically active, swimming, skiing, cycling, and jogging until the age of 80.
On retirement from the university, he became actively involved in parish church work, assisting in various parishes throughout Cape Breton. He also served on a number of community boards, including the initial board of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He was the recipient of the Order of Canada and of an honorary degree from St. F.X. University.
He was predeceased by one sister, Sister Mary Campbell, C.N.D. He is survived by two sisters, Sister Camille Campbell, C.N.D., of Sydney, and Joan Gibson of Seattle, Washington.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m., Friday, May 3, 2013, with a prayer vigil at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel, 755 George St. Sydney. Mass of the Resurrection at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church in Sydney. The mass will be preceded by an academic procession.
In memory of Dr. Campbell, donations may be made to one of the many institutions of the universities that he was involved in establishing.
