It is with heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing at home of our mother, Betty Clarke, on Friday May 3, 2013.
Born in Spiritwood, Saskatchewan, on March 13, 1933, Mom was the daughter of the late John Levi and Nettie (DePriest) Butts.
A member of Seaview Golf and Country Club, Mom was an accomplished golfer who participated in many tournaments including the Canadian championships in New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Mom was a 21-time Seaview Ladies’ champion and the Seaview Ladies’ club championship was named for her in 2002. Mom was inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 and into the Northside Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. More than the trophies she won, however, Mom valued the friendships she made during her years as a golfer – especially her friendships with the late Alaire Kerr and Kay Greaves.
Mom was a great cook, and treats were always available at any time. Mom loved spending time with family and she took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Mom was an avid Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and she was particularly happy that the Leafs made the playoffs this year.
In recent years, Mom enjoyed time spent at the Senior Program at Harbourview Hospital; treasuring the many new friends she made and the exceptional care she received from all staff members at the hospital.
Mom will always be loved by her children – Jerry (Peggy), Dartmouth; Stephen (Angela), North Sydney; Kelly (Jody), North Sydney. Grandmother will be sorely missed by her grandchildren - Jerry (Erin) and Nick (Laurie); Meaghan, Alanna, and Stephen (Shalane); and Grahame and Renee, and by her great-grandchildren - Dylan, Mason, Roman, Emma, Aleksa, and Karalee. Mom is also survived by her sisters Eleanor, Oklahoma; Laura, Linda, and Sharon, Lunenburg; by her brother Manning, Lunenburg; and by her special niece, Mae, Truro.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by our dad, Jerry Clarke in 2010; her sisters Maxine, Juanita, Bridget, and Kate; her brothers John, Bob, Cecil, and Raymond; and her stepmother, Mabel.
Visitation for Betty will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Emera Center Northside or the Seniors Program at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
