It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ernest J. Keigan, 63, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and nephew, on Sunday, May 12, 2013, at the QEII Hospital in Halifax, after a brief illness. Ernie was a resident of Wolfville and formerly of North Sydney.
Born in North Sydney, Ernie was the son of the late Ernie and Lillian (Pearcey) Keigan.
In his younger years he worked as a stevedore with CN Marine in North Sydney, and after moving to Halifax, worked as a drywaller. Most recently he was working in the construction trade, enjoying very much his job at Polycorp. Ernie took great pride in his work and because of that he never failed an inspection.
He enjoyed reading and learning about history and sciences.
Ernie was a former member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
He was a devoted father and grandfather, his greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his daughter, Lilly (Jeff), Hammonds Plains; and his grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Ceighlyn, Jeffrey and Connor. Also surviving are his brothers, Bill (Rachael), Sydney Mines, Tom (Emily), Leonard (Angela), both of North Sydney, Jerry (Brenda), Dave, both of Ontario; and sisters, Edie (Bill) Bonar, Millville, Lilly Donovan, Cathy (Scott) Leamon, Sydney Mines, Edna (Sherman) Devoe, Florence, Jean Keigan (Chuck), North Sydney, and Lucy (Felix) Smith, Wagmatcook; many nieces and nephews; and also his aunts, Anna McCarthy and Nora Keagan, North Sydney, and Jean Stickley, Labrador.
Besides his parents, Ernie was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy (Blair) Young, Marie (Bob) Gerrow, Elizabeth Anne, who died in infancy, and brother, Dennis and special friend, Carol, Halifax.
Visitation for Ernie will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m., Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
