WIEBE- Maria (Mary) of Lethbridge formerly of Swift Current passed away at the age of 94 on May 22nd at St. Michaels Hospital in Lethbridge, Alberta. Mary was born to Aron and Maria Fehr on September 16, 1918 at Sec.8,TP.13,RGE.13,W.3 in the Wymark area. She was the oldest of nine children, four of whom predeceased her in infancy. Being the oldest, she was needed to help at home so her education was at Versailles school for a mere four years. She learned to read & write in both English and German. She was baptized upon her faith at the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church in Wymark on May 13, 1940. She worked hard at home and when she met Abram Wiebe, they were married on December 6, 1942 at the Sommerfeld Mennonite Church, Wymark by Rev. Peter J. Dyck. Abram & Mary were poor and moved around a lot always either looking for better work or a larger home for there growing family. Mom's faith has seen her through many difficult situations. As children, we remember her opening her 3 room house in Swift Current to have a Happy Hour Bible club for her children after school with the help of her friend Ann Quiring. She also came to McMahon when we lived there. Mom & Dad made sure the children were raised in a Christian atmosphere, making sure we attended church and Sunday school on a regular basis. As a family we did a lot of singing and held our own "church" at home when weather did not permit us to attend. Our family was poor but there was always room for having a friend or relative come to stay. Where ever we lived on acreage, a farm or small town if possible mom would make sure she had a cow & chickens to help feed the family. We didn't always have a lot of meat to eat, but bread was baked every two or three days along with cake, cookies or other pastries. They lived in homes in Swift Current, Helston, Manitoba, Blumenhof, McMahon, Coaldale, Alberta, Schoenfeld, Herbert and Swift Current. Mom always had a large garden and when the children had nearly all left home, she grew a lot of cucumbers and corn and sold them on the Trading Post and also joined the local farmers market. Sewing was mom's passion. She could spend many hours making quilts for the grandchildren and also donating to a charity to be sent abroad. Mom spent time going to garage sales and alot of time hooking rugs with cut up rags. She loved to crochet in later years when her eyesight could no longer handle the sewing. After our father passed away, mom lived in the Heritage Towers for 12 years. She enjoyed her life there and had many friends. Her sister Susie was ultimately her best friend and sadly missed when she passed away in 2004. Mom moved to Lethbridge in 2009 to be closer to more of her children and grandchildren. Mom loved all her children and grandchildren and took great pride in presenting them to her friends and never forgot to say "I love you" when we went for a visit. She enjoyed her life at the Blue Sky Lodge. She has been plagued by arthritis and cancer but was very excited and ready if anyone would take her out for coffee or supper. She loved going for coffee at McDonalds. Mary is predeceased by her husband of 54 years Abram Wiebe in 1996; her parents Aron Fehr in 1975 & Maria Fehr in1988; brothers John, Abe and sister Susie (Abe ) Martens, parents-in-law Abraham & Anna Wiebe; sister-in-laws Anna (John) Schellenberg; Elizabeth Dick, Agnes Krahn, Margaret Wiebe, Lena Wiebe, Mary (Jake) Unger, brothers-in-law Peter (Nettie) Wiebe and Bill (Barbara) Wiebe.
