It is with profound sadness that I announce the sudden passing of my wonderful husband, John Hugh MacArthur, at our home on Brown Street, Sydney, on Thursday, June 6, 2013.
Hughie was born on June 14, 1951, at Grand Mira North to the late Hugh Francis and Mary Wilson (McLeod) MacArthur.
Hughie and I were married for 38 years. I have lost the love of my life and best friend. Along with myself, his wife Ernestina (McKinnon) MacArthur, he leaves to mourn, his children, Joanne (Terry Rose) and Jeffen Hugh (Ashlie) to whom he was a devoted father. “Pa” cherished our three precious grandchildren, Austen Hugh, Ayden Michael and Alexis Makenna MacArthur. Hughie is also survived by his sister, Sarah (Reg) Kane, Sydney; his brothers, James, Grand Mira North, Danny (Rose Marie), Halifax, Francis (Margo), Halifax, Cameron (Judy), New Brunswick. Also his extended family, Donald John McKinnon, Mary Warren, Marion (Tom) Williamson, Scotchtown, Rita (William) Moore, Archie (Marie) McKinnon, New Waterford, Joann Nearing, Albert Bridge, Bob (Betty Ann) McKinnon, Portage, Alex (Joan) McKinnon and Angus (Joann) McKinnon, Hamilton, Ont. Hughie had many special nieces and nephews and was godfather to Michael Kane and Tessa McRae. He will be missed also by his best friend, Donnie Gillis, Ontario.
Besides his parents, Hughie was predeceased by his in-laws, John Angus and Mary (Thomas) McKinnon, and very special sister-in-law, Kathy McKinnon. Also by brothers-in-law, John Warren and Alonzo Nearing.
At the time of his death, Hughie was employed by Northern Contracting, presently at Lingan Power Plant. He also worked many years with Doug Burns Construction as a heavy equipment operator. Hughie had a strong faith in God and was a member of St. Anthony Daniel parish, Sydney. He was an organ donor and many will benefit from his kind gifts. He was a blood donor his whole life.
Hughie was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, son-in-law and friend to all. Besides spending time with his family, he loved sports of all kinds, especially his Toronto Maple Leafs. He enjoyed many good times with family and friends. He had a great sense of humour and quick wit.
By his request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Hughie’s life will take place on Wednesday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Daniel Church.

“Under His wings - oh
What a precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me;
Resting in Jesus I’m safe evermore.”
