Johanna Maria Martens, 90, Seaview Richmond County, passed away June 8, 2013, at Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston.
Born in Arnhem, the Netherlands, she was a daughter of Anna Pepperkamp (Robrecht) and Johannes Pepperkamp; she immigrated to Canada in 1952 and settled in Seaview with her husband, Theodorus ‘Ted’.
Mom had a huge heart and never turned away anyone in need. She had a strong sense of community service and during her life volunteered many hours often taking on a leadership role. She served as the president of the Crippled Children’s Society and president of the Strait Richmond Hospital Auxiliary. Mom took great pride in her membership in the Royal Canadian Legion and she was a life member of both the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #47 and the ladies auxiliary. She served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary for 11 consecutive years and joined Branch #47 as an associate member and served on the branch executive, as vice president, service officer and secretary treasurer.
She is survived by her husband, Ted; sons, John (Sheila), Edmonton, Alta., Theo (Pauline), Seaview; daughters, Marina, Port Hawkesbury, Annalisa, River Bourgeois, Jacqueline (Gary) Steinbeck, Man.; nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her sister, Cecelia van Mulukom, brother-in-law, Joseph van Mulukom, her parents and two daughters in infancy.
Resting in the River Bourgeois Funeral Parlor, Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be offered Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. John The Baptist Church, River Bourgeois with Rev. Dennis Lamey, presiding. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Leeside Society or the Strait Richmond Health Care Foundation.
