We are saddened to announce the passing of Gerald Percy Bashforth, formerly of Bonavista, NL, at the age of 63 on June 29, 2013 in Comox, BC. He was buried on July 9 in Courtenay Civic Cemetery. Gerald was born on September 27, 1949 in Preeceville, SK. He graduated from high school in 1967, and went on to earn an MSc degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972. Gerald met his future wife Elaine in Saskatoon, SK, and they were married on April 30, 1971. They had four children: son Arden (Julie Qvistgaard) and daughters Adrienne (Richard) Banting, Linnea (Zane) Ross, and Leanne. Gerald’s career began as an instructor at Lakeland College (Vermillion, AB), and was followed by positions in the Department of Agriculture, Government of Manitoba (Winnipeg, MB). After a move to Brandon, MB, Gerald worked at Assiniboine Community College, eventually becoming Vice President. In 2005, Gerald took an early retirement and moved with Elaine to lovely Bonavista. Despite being a long way from home, it was here that Gerald felt very much at home, being involved with the Bonavista Historical Townscape Foundation, the Chamber of Commerce, and many other volunteer projects in the community. Although Gerald moved away from Bonavista in the later stages of his illness, a large part of his heart will always remain there. Thanks for all the memories.
