It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother who passed away at home on July 4, 2013, with his family at his bedside.
Born in Dominion on April 3, 1932, he was the son of the late Charles and Harriett (Slaunwhite) Gillis. He was employed by Cape Breton Development Corp for 50 years. He was a Korean War veteran and was an active legion member for a number of years at Branch 78 and now a member of Branch 3. He was an avid bingo player and a true Blue Jays and Leafs fan. He was a kind and loving gentleman and a great role model for his family, whom he loved spending time with. He will always be remembered for his smile and wit.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Margaret Jean, Eileen and Lynn (Cally); one son, Billy (Diane); four grandchildren, Alex, Ashley, Matthew and MacKenzie; great-granddaughter Jordyn; sisters, Frances, Helen (Minnow); brother, Joe (Alexina); several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his loving wife of 45 years, Georgie; brother, Billy and brother-in-law, John.
Visitation will be on Saturday, July 6, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, July 7, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 8, at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Bridgeport. The Rev Leo Boone will be officiating. The interment will follow the mass in Calvary Cemetery.
