THOMSON- Roy Alexander Thomson age 89 years of Frontier, Saskatchewan died on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Shaunavon Hospital and Care Centre in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan surrounded by the love of his family. He was born January 30, 1924 on Sec 23, Tp 32, Rge 9, W3 in the Delisle, Saskatchewan district, the youngest of two children. He grew up during the depression on the family farm. He received his education at Swanson, Saskatchewan and graduated at Davis, Saskatchewan. He became an Able Seaman in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 and served until the end of WWII in 1945. He was proud of the years he spent serving his country and would often talk about life aboard the ship, the many places he saw and the opportunity he had to live on both coasts in Canada, training in Victoria and being stationed in Halifax. He returned to the prairies after the war, eventually becoming employed in the parts department of the Ford dealership in Assiniboia. During this time, he met and fell in love with a student nurse named Barbara Onerheim. They were married on January 14, 1949 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. The young couple continued to live in Assiniboia until 1956 when they moved to Frontier to help Barb’s dad with his business, Onerheim’s Garage, a Massey Harris dealership. Initially the move was to be a temporary arrangement, but turned out to be a permanent one. He became a partner in the business shortly after he joined his father-in-law and continued to run it until 1977 when he sold it, giving him more time to care for Barb who had been diagnosed with ALS. He continued to work at various jobs including working as a parts man for the new owners of his business, stints at B&B Farm Fuels, Flexi-Coil and, more recently, delivering units for various GMC dealerships in Medicine Hat, a job he did until he was 83 years old. He lived in Medicine Hat for several years starting in 1993 before returning home to Frontier in 2007. Roy was a past member of the Masonic Lodge, the Lions Club, and the Frontier Board of Trade; he served on the Village of Frontier Council, was a charter member of the Frontier Golf Club and a faithful member of the United Church both in Frontier and in Medicine Hat. He was a very active and involved member of his community. He valued hard work, honesty and time spent with his family and in his community. He was pragmatic, proud and meticulous and believed that any job doing was worth doing well. He had a kind heart and a sensitive soul. He was very social and loved to visit with people wherever he went. He was predeceased by his wife Barbara on April 8, 1982, his parents Alex and Elsie Thomson, his parents-in-law Oliver and Helga Onerheim, brothers-in-law Larry Stacey, Willis Clay, and Stan Onerheim, and his nephews, James Onerheim and Douglas Clay.
