Doris Hartwell
HARTWELL, DORIS ALICE - Doris Alice Hartwell, 94, of Monarch Hall, Riverview passed away peacefully at her residence on Monday, June 24, 2013. Born in Hull, QC, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Duff) Porter. Doris was a former comptroller for a dairy in Hull, QC, where she kept the accounts. She retained her math skills and this year was still able to convert from degrees Celsius to Fahrenheit in an instant. Doris was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and a terrific cook and baker - her pies and cookies being especially delicious. She was a longstanding member of Central United Church and the UCW and she enjoyed playing bridge, walking and knitting. In her later years, she knit hundreds of pairs of children's mittens, donating them to various charities. Doris lived with her husband, John in Moncton's old West End and they spent their summers entertaining at the family cottage on Parlee Beach. In later years they spent the winter months visiting with many of their Moncton friends, while making many new ones, in Old Bridge Park, North Fort Myers, FL. Doris will be remembered for her quick, dry wit, the stories she loved to tell and the care and determination she brought to everything she did. She will be sadly missed by her loving children, Diane Lawrence (Lindsay) of Richmond, BC and Murray Hartwell (Emily Somers) of Halifax, NS; and beloved granddaughters, Allison Lawrence of London, England and Laura Hartwell of Toronto, ON. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John L. Hartwell; brother, Douglas Porter; and daughter-in-law, Monique (Lagace) Hartwell. The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the kind care given to Doris by the staff of Monarch Hall, Canterbury Hall and Royal Court.
Resting at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995). Doris requested there be no visitation or funeral service. In lieu, a public graveside service will be held at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 1:00 pm, with Reverend Ron Maund officiating. A reception will follow at Royal Court Parkland Estates, 822 Coverdale Road, Riverview, NB from 2 to 3:30 pm. In memory of Doris, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association, Friends of the Moncton Hospital or Central United Church would be appreciated by the family.
