BANNISTER, HILYARD - It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of Hilyard Warden Bannister, 83, of Elgin, NB on Sunday, July 7, 2013 at the Moncton City Hospital. Born July 30, 1929, Hilyard was a son of the late Percy and Ada (Collier) Bannister. He is survived by his wife of almost 64 years, Kathleen (Harrison) Bannister; daughter, Myrna (Kenneth) Martin of Petitcodiac; and by his son, Stephen (Debbie) of Elgin. Hilyard was a devoted and much loved grandfather to Kenda Martin, Nicholas Martin, Jarrette (Sarah Jane) Bannister, Justin (Lisa van de Brand) Bannister, Christy (Scott) Hoyt, Kelly Terris, Shauna Terris, and great-granddaughters, Olivia and Bridgette Hoyt. Hilyard is also survived by his sister, Helen (Robert) Chandler of Billerica, MA; sister-in-law, Myra Shaffer of Elgin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cecil and Millie Colpitts of Rothesay; as well as several cousins. He was a special uncle to his nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Hilyard was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene (Dorothy) and Cecil; sister-in-law, Anne; two infant siblings; and by his birth daughter, Holliegene (Steeves) Terris in 2001. As a truck driver, Hilyard in his early years, worked for Sayre Lumber Co. and the Dept. of Public Works. He also worked at CN Intermodal, and retired after 32 years of service. He enjoyed horse hauls, attending county fairs, especially the Albert Fair, gardening, sugar-making season, and his Albert County home. Hilyard was a member of the First Elgin Baptist Church where he served for many years. Well loved by his community; family, friends, and neighbours were always welcomed in his home.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Armstrong’s Funeral Home, where visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm; the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 2:00pm with Rev. David Hawkesworth presiding at the First Elgin Baptist Church. Interment will take place at the New Elgin Cemetery. Donations to the Moncton City Hospital Palliative Care, Canadian Cancer Society, or to the charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
