With heartfelt sadness we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Wilfred Collis, 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at his residence.
Wilfred was born on Dec. 10, 1930, on Brunett Island, Fortune Bay, N.L, the son of the late Richard and Suzannah (Mullins) (Baker) Collis.
Wilfred was employed by the Newfoundland Railway and later CN Marine Ferry Service, where he worked his way up to Chief Steward. He finally came ashore as cost controller with CN Marine until his retirement. Wilfred was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church.
He was past master of the Royal Albert Masonic Lodge #19, North Sydney where he received his 50-year Jewel in 2012. He was also a member of the Lodge of Perfection, Valley of Sydney and the Keith Sovereign Chapter of Rose Croix, receiving 15-18 degrees. He was also a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, NS Consistory, receiving 19-32 degrees. Wilfred was inducted into the Shriners Phelae Temple, Halifax, in 1977 and was a member of the Cape Breton Shrine Club. He was a past patron of the Munroe Chapter #26 O.E.S. North Sydney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Amelia (Baker) Collis; his two sons, Richard (Heather), Big Bras d’Or, Barry (Brenda), Dartmouth; and daughter, Annette (Charlie), Sydney Mines; his grandchildren, Genevieve, Sean, Adam, Diane, Shannon and Cassie and four great-grandchildren, Zander, Easton, Nadia and Nolan. Also surviving are his brothers, Jim (Phyllis) Baker, Sydney, and Leonard (Pat) Baker, Rencontre East, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Wilfred was predeceased by his brothers Edwin Collis and Hubert Baker.
Visitation for Wilfred will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
Family flowers only, memorial donations may be made to St. John the Baptist Anglican Church or Shriners Crippled Children Fund.
