Norma Carty

CARTY, NORMA - Norma Leola Carty, age 82, of Halifax, passed away peacefully at home with her daughter at her bedside on August 1, 2013, after a fierce two year battle with cancer. Born in Emerson, New Brunswick, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Debbie (Beers) McLeod. Predeceased by her husband, William (Bill) Carty in 2009, she is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Brock Beazley) and her beloved grand-dogs, Angus and Charlie, as well as her brothers and sisters, William (Bill) McLeod (Pearl-departed), Lillian (Ted) Coneen, Kenneth (Hazel) McLeod, Carl (Rose) McLeod and Gary (Christine) McLeod, as well as many nieces and nephews. Growing up in Moncton, Norma graduated from Moncton High School with honours. She would have loved to have been able to attend university, but instead was fortunate to pursue her dream of travel and join Trans Canada Airlines quickly after high school, which later became Air Canada. During her time with the airline, she worked at the Moncton Airport, the original Halifax Airport at Shearwater, as well as an Air Canada Reservations/Fare agent in downtown Halifax. She retired after a 34-year career in the airline industry. Along with a love of travel, she was a gifted pianist and was a long-term attendee and supporter of the symphony. Her love of learning continued in her retirement as she returned to studying piano along with zooming through her daughter’s English university curriculum. After her family, Norma’s second love was her beloved cottage on the South Shore, where family would gather every summer. Just a few days before her passing, she was able to sit once more by her ocean.
Visitation will be in Cruikshank’s Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., Thursday, August 8, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service is Friday, August 9, 11 a.m., St. Matthew’s United Church, 1479 Barrington Street, Halifax, with a reception to follow.
