WARD- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of G. Jean Ward, age 81, on Tuesday, July 30th, 2013, with her family at her side. Jean was born Sept 2, 1931, in Gainsborough, SK and was raised in Saskatoon. Jean attended Nutana Collegiate - her yearbook picture said “A star in track and basketball. A quiet member of our class, the only time we hear her is all the time.” She met Brian while completing a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Saskatchewan. Jean loved her time as a member of the Huskiette volleyball and basketball teams and received a major athletic award each year. Jean worked for two years as a Social Worker in Moose Jaw and married Brian on August 14, 1954, in Regina, SK. The happy couple then moved to Swift Current - their home for 58 years. Jean chose to become a stay-at-home mom and was an engaged citizen of Swift Current. She was very involved in her children’s activities. She enjoyed volunteering and sat on the Swift Current Parks & Recreation Board for many years and the Saskatchewan Ladies Curling Association executive. Jean was very social and enjoyed golf, curling, playing bridge, and coffee-time with her many friends. She was always smiling and treated everyone as a friend. Jean was very honored by receiving lifetime member awards from the Saskatchewan Ladies Curling Association and the Swift Current Curling Club. Jean & Brian enjoyed cruises, traveling throughout Europe and North America, with many trips to Arizona, Hawaii, and the Caribbean Islands with family and friends. Jean’s greatest joy was her family. The family’s summer vacations spent traveling throughout Canada were among everyone’s favourite memories. Jean & Brian moved to Regina in January of 2012. Health concerns prompted Jean’s move to the Solace Care Home in late August of 2012. She enjoyed the many visits from her family and friends. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Kathy, Dr. Robin, and Shawn, Samantha, the fantastic staff at the Solace Care Home for providing a wonderful home for Jean in her final year and moments, and also Doreen, Jean’s best friend at Solace. Jean was predeceased by her parents, Gertrude & Lithgow Young; sister, Lois Sandstrom; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Griffiths, Shirley Yeo, Orlean Fulcher; brothers-in-law, Garth Sandstrom, Lionel Fulcher, Louis Fulcher; special cousin, Jack Young; and niece, Lianne Gusway. Left to cherish her memory is her best friend and husband, Brian; daughters, Nancy Samis, Patricia (Roger) Zelinski, Dawna (Wayne) Nielson; grandchildren, Krista (Jennings) Martin, Kori (Garfield) Parke, Kelly (Natalie) Samis, Erin Zelinski (Doug VanderLaan), Andrew Zelinski, Carley (Michael) Olfert, and Kailyn (Blair) Stengler; great-grandchildren, Rylan and Kingston Parke, Layla and Svana Samis, Kadyn and Callyn Olfert; brother-in-law, Bill Yeo; numerous nieces and nephews; Dean Samis, and many dear, life-long friends including Betty & Len Menzies. The Celebration of Life Service was held on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at 11:00 am from the East Side Church of God, Swift Current, SK with Lay Pastor, Jill Cavanagh officiating. The pianist for the service was Mary Henderson with Sharon Veer as soloist. The eulogy was shared by Carley Olfert and Kailyn Stengler. Readers were Erin Zelinski and Kelly Samis. The ushers in the church were Craig Menzies and Heather Campbell. The Private Family Interment Service was held at the Mount Pleasant Burial Park Columbaria, Swift Current, SK with Dawna Nielson serving as urn bearer. In memory of Jean Ward, donations made to the Lung Association of Saskatchewan or to KidSport Saskatchewan would be appreciated by the family.
