It is with great sadness that we share the news that our much-loved “Poppy” passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013.
Dad was predeceased in 1991 by his loving wife, Anne.
Born in New Waterford, on Sept. 11, 1928, he was the son of the late Carl and Harriet (Barley) Grechuk.
Poppy was committed to his family and those around him. He was a jack-of-all-trades who lived his life believing that nothing was impossible. No job was ever too big or too small. His working life brought him to retirement in 1991 after 43 years with Cape Breton Development Corporation.
A kind and gentle spirit, he will be forever remembered and deeply missed by his daughter, Cathy (Sandy Burns); his three sons, Brian (Mary), David (Sandra) and Carl; as well as the stars of his heaven; his grandchildren, Trevor, B.J., LeeAnn, Katelyn, John, Carl, Daniel, and Michael and his great-grandson, Hayden, who affectionately and most appropriately referred to him as “The Great Poppy." He is also survived by his loving nieces and nephew.
Besides his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Billy Bullock, sister,
Lil Pierrard, and nephew, Sonny Pierrard.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Visitation for Poppy will be held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford on Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A celebration of his life will take place Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard, 3180 Mount Carmel Ave., New Waterford, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in the St. Michael’s Cemetery. All are invited to join the family for a reception in St. Leonard’s Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
