Passed peacefully away in the presence of family on August 12, 2013. Predeceased by his father James O’Neill, his mother Mary Josephine O’Neill and his brother John O’Neill. He is survived by his beloved nieces and nephews, Shelia O’Neill-Dixon, James Arthur O’Neill, Paul John O’Neill and Irene O’Neill all of Massachusetts, as well as nine great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his devoted cousin Margaret Buckingham and a large extended family of many cousins in the O’Neill, Buckingham and Flynn families. Mr. O’Neill was a well-known writer, actor, broadcaster and historian. In the 1970s he wrote the book “The Oldest City” being a history of St. John’s and it remains the definitive work on this subject. He is the recipient of many honours and awards. He was named to the Order of Canada in 1990. At Mr. O’Neill’s request cremation has taken place. A funeral service will be held on August 31, 2013 at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist with a reception to honour his life to follow. Further particulars will be announced.
