Lance Chamberlain

LANCE “LANNY” CHAMBERLAIN
February 9, 1943 – August 9, 2013

Lanny was born on February 9, 1943 in Smeaton Hospital. He was the third son to Alfred and Donelda Chamberlain. He spent the first few years of his life living on the family farm north of Snowden and later the family moved into Snowden.

In 1967 Lanny married Merle Grunerud. They spent their early years in Yellowknife. Lanny worked for Byers Transport driving truck and loading aircraft and later as manager for Pacific Western Airlines in Hay River. While in Yellowknife their first two children were born, Tracy in 1968 and Tina in 1972. In 1974 Lanny, Merle and family moved back home to Smeaton where he worked in the logging industry. In 1975 their last child Aaron was born.

In 1977 Lanny and his two brothers Jim and Terry started farming and he continued this passion till his passing. His second passion was being caretaker at Smeaton Rec Center – which he did faithfully for the last 30 years.

Lanny’s competitive spirit always showed up when he was curling in numerous local bonspiels. The highlight of his curling career was winning the 2013 Grand Challenge in Snowden with Jim, Terry and Esther. He also looked forward to the annual Snowden Sports Day where he always recruited enough family members for the Chamberlain ball team and never felt he was too old to participate in the Smeaton Demo Derbies – never ever letting us forget that he won the first one and one more. Lanny had a genuine love for animals and if you were lucky enough to be his favourite you were given the royal treatment. He always looked forward to daily visits from his grandchildren and enjoyed listening to their latest adventures.

Lanny will be deeply missed by his wife Merle, daughters Tracy (Carman), Tina (Dale) and sons Aaron (Jen), Christopher and Steven. His grandchildren Christina- who is expecting a future great grandchild (Trevor), Connor, Justin, Alex, Ryan, Alea, Grace and Lily. His brothers Jim (Darlene) and Terry (Esther) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Lanny is predeceased by his parents Alfred and Donelda (nee Sutherland) Chamberlain, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Daisy and Bill Grunerud, his son-in-law Greg Butterfield, his sisters-in-law Beula Chamberlain and Gen Beaudoin and his brothers-in-law Rick Sotheran, Norm Cole and Ray Grunerud.
