Frances Reid

REID, FRANCES ELEANOR - After a brief illness, Eleanor Reid, a long-time resident of Fredericton, N.B., passed away peacefully at Thomas Hall on August 27th, 2013, with family at her bedside. She was in her 102nd year. Born in Montreal, Quebec in 1912 to the late Frederic Drummond and his wife, Ethel (Hartles) Drummond, she was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Elston Reid; by her brother, Kenneth Drummond (Pat); by her sister Joyce Rogers (Eric); by her sister-in-law Viola Johnsson (Ivar); and by a baby grand-daughter, Laura Gregory. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughter Carol Gregory and husband Gordon, of Fredericton; by her son Alan Reid and wife Barbara, of Lefaivre, Ontario; by grandsons Andrew Gregory, of Fredericton, Geoffrey Reid, of Montreal, and Thomas Boucher-Reid (Louisa), of Montreal; by grand-daughters Kathryn Gregory, of Fredericton, and Courtney Reid, of Nepean, Ontario; by great-grand-daughters Anneliese Reid, Alexa El-Khoury, and Artemis Gregory; and by several nieces and nephews. Eleanor will also be missed by a surviving brother-in-law, William Earle Reid (Gloria), of Ancaster, Ontario, as well as by many friends, notably her friend and faithful Red Cross Friendly Visitor, Connie Mason, whose generous spirit was so much appreciated over the years, by her and by family. As a young woman, Eleanor worked at a prestigious Montreal law firm, Brown, Montgomery & McMichael (a predecessor of Ogilvy Renault, now Norton Rose Fulbright Canada). After raising her two children through their school years, she returned to the work force in Saint John as an administrative assistant to a senior officer of the federal Department of Public Works. Eleanor was an accomplished musician, having served as organist in several Anglican churches in various Canadian communities over the years, and having enjoyed studying and playing the piano into her 80s. She had also been an active member of the Fredericton Golf and Curling Club for many years, and was an enthusiastic bridge player until losing her vision late in life. She was an honorary member of the Sir Howard Douglas Chapter of I.O.D.E., and had been a volunteer and supporter of the Fredericton chapter of the Kidney Foundation of Canada. Eleanor was a devout parishioner of Christ Church Cathedral in Fredericton for many years, and volunteered in several church activities.
There will be a visitation on Thursday evening, August 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., at McAdam’s Funeral Home, 160 York Street, Fredericton. The funeral service will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Friday, August 30, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the Cathedral Memorial Hall at 168 Church Street. The Very Reverend Keith Joyce will officiate. Interment will be at the Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Christ Church Cathedral, the Canadian Red Cross, the CNIB, or a charity of the donor’s choice. The family wishes to extend its gratitude to the staff of Thomas Hall, whose sensitive and caring devotion to Eleanor, especially during her final hours, is greatly appreciated.
