It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of Michael Robert 'Bobby' Cummings, 60, of New Waterford on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, due to cancer, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Bernard and Grace (LeBlanc) Cummings of New Waterford.
Bobby was a truck driver, fork-lift operator and machine operator for various companies in Ontario. He later moved back home to Cape Breton where he was employed by Highland Fisheries in Glace Bay.
Bobby was a kind, caring and gentle person who loved his family very much. He enjoyed playing darts, bike riding and hanging out with the good ol' boys. In his younger years, he enjoyed swimming at the King's Rock and skating.
Bobby is survived by three daughters, Loretta (Chris) Sharpe-Basden, Jill (Chris) Latty, both of Brantford, Ont., Joan Marie Gilbert (Derek Wrathall), Glace Bay; brother, Johnny (Vivian) McDonald, Davenport, Fla,; sisters, Bernadette 'Etta' (Doug) Fraser, New Waterford, Olie (Winston) Timmons, Dominion, Gina (Ed) Smolensky, Lingan, and Annie (Martin) Odo, New Waterford, who was like a second mother to Bobby; special friends, Marie Gilbert and Wendy Doucette; grandchildren, Lauren and Taylor Sharpe-Basden, Kate Latty, Anthony and Colby Gilbert; several nieces and nephews whom he was very close to, some of whom were just like his own brothers.
Bobby was predeceased by sisters, Kathleen 'Kay' Stanford, Joan Somerton (Rigby), brothers, Russell Edward Cummings and William 'Billy' Rigby.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the An Cala palliative care unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
