Francis Michael (Frank) Fitzgerald

Date de décès : 29 août 2013

Francis Michael (Frank) Fitzgerald, son of Michael and Bridget (Murphy) Fitzgerald, passed away peacefully on August 29, 2013, at the age of 85.
Frank (Dad) was born in St. John’s, NL and grew up there, in Corner Brook, NL and in Toronto, ON. In his early years Dad worked at the Bowater Pulp and Paper Mill in Corner Brook. He was also employed as the building cleaning supervisor at hospitals in Corner Brook, Truro and Toronto. But Dad was perhaps best known as a travelling salesman. He sold aluminium storm windows, pots, pans, encyclopaedias, insurance and, most notably, vacuum cleaners. His wit and charm ensured that many homes on the west coast of NL and parts of NS were well stocked with his wares.
Dad was very active in sports during his youth, and swam, skated and skied until time slowed him down. He then became an avid baseball fan and watched as many games as he could find on TV.
Dad was also a self-proclaimed world champion cribbage master and as well, excelled at checkers. His late night games with his brother Mike are still hotly discussed among avid checker players.
Dad retired in the Halifax area to be near his family. Dad came out of retirement when Halifax Regional Police put out the call for exceptional people to fill the ranks of school crossing guards. Dad successfully guided hundreds of children safely across the roads of HRM.
Dad was predeceased by his parents and by his siblings Joe, Roy, Kevin and Mary (Ned) Buckle. He is survived by his siblings Betty, Corner Brook, Sheila Sova, Cheboygan, Michigan, Jean (Bill) Murphy, Corner Brook, Patsy (Bryan) Greene, St. John’s, NL, Mike, Steady Brook, NL and sister-in-law Gussie Fitzgerald, Toronto.
He is also survived by his former wife and very close friend, Patricia Fitzgerald of Kentville, NS, as well as his children Bert (Rhoda Frampton), Kentville, Pauline (Joe) Melanson, Sheila (George) Harnish, Ann (Bill Cunningham), all of HRM, Steve (Fonda Bushell), St. John’s, NL, Dennis, Toronto and Irene, HRM.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Lori Riley (Paul), Tom (Megan) and Claudia Melanson, Colin (Ashley), Julianne and Gina Harnish, Sarah, Emily and Henry Fitzgerald and Genevieve Cunningham.
Cremation has taken place and a private family gathering to celebrate Frank’s life will take place in Halifax on September 7. Donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Condolences may be forwarded on-line to bertf@eastlink.ca or by mail to 45 Churchill Ave., Kentville, NS, B4N 2H8.
Dad’s health had not been the best for the last several years but his spirit was alive and kicking right up to the end.
Dad always looked forward to his annual summer trip to NL to visit his old friends and family and will be returning sometime soon for his final trip to his beloved NL.
