It is with great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Lloyd W. Hare, 91, on Friday Oct. 11, 2013, at Harbour View Hospital, Sydney Mines, with his loving wife Flo by his side.
Born in North Sydney, Lloyd was a son of the late Rupert and Rebecca (Billard) Hare.
Lloyd was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Canadian Air Force and later with the Canadian Army. Lloyd worked as a stevedore for CN Marine for many years until his retirement. He was a past president of International Longshoremen Union #1259. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19 North Sydney.
Lloyd was a faithful and active member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church serving as former warden, vestry clerk, envelope secretary and regional representative for the Anglican Young People Association. He was very focused in the audio (tape) ministry, where he would copy the Sunday services for the shut-ins week after week. Lloyd sorted and hand delivered the church mailings, was a member of the Brotherhood of Anglican Churchmen. He was active in the scout movement, an avid bowler, enjoyed travelling, listening to live music and spending time in the country at the cottage.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 65 years, Flo (Matthews) Hare; his daughters, Ferne (Jim) Austin, Skye Glenn, N.S., Lois (Len) Hannan, Carvel, Alta.; his sons, Rupert (Yolanda) Hare, Florenceville, N.B., and Arthur (Lea), Bryson-Hare, Sundre, Alta. Lloyd is survived by 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
Lloyd was the last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by brothers, Doug, Edward, Les, Berkley, Sanford and Alphonses 'Tiny', who was killed serving overseas during the Second World War, also his sisters, Kathleen and Hazel.
Visitation for Lloyd was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev Carl Fraser officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
