MESSENGER, Donald Belmont 95, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at home in Clark’s Harbour, surrounded by his sons and other loved ones. Donald was born July 24, 1918 and was the last remaining member of the family of Thomas “Smith” Messenger and Louie Mae (Nickerson) Messenger. His work life included lobstering with his dad Smith and his brother Lawrence off Crawley’s Island. He was a member of the Canadian Merchant Marines during World War II. After the war he worked on the hydrographic survey boats, Acadia and Pinto, surveying the Atlantic shoreline and islands. During later years he returned to the lobster fishery until his retirement in his late fifties. Donald enjoyed his many years of retirement with his wife Norma, spending happy days between their home in Clark’s Harbour and their cottage in Clyde. His greatest blessings in life were his three sons. He was known to one and all as a true gentleman. Donald is survived by his sons, Donald Jr, “Donnie” (June), North East Point; John “Jack” (Donna), Sherose Island; Thomas (Roxanne), Centerville; grandchildren, Lisa, Kelly, Travis, Troy, Jena, Jennifer, and step-granddaughter Melanie; along with eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Amy France, Grace Samson, Rita MacKay, Catherine Duffy, Edith Messenger and Virginia Messenger. He was predeceased by Norma, his loving wife of 66 years, as well as brothers, Lawrence, Carl, Bernard, Bruce, Gerald; sisters, Olive and Valerie. The funeral service was held on Friday, October 25 from the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington with Pastor Adam Renouf officiating. Interment followed in the Riverdale Cemetery, Riverhead. Memorial donations may be made to the Riverdale Cemetery or the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON).
